Salta & Jujuy, Salt

What you’ll do & see

Traveling through Salta and Jujuy means stepping away from the well-trodden and into a more intimate way of experiencing Argentina’s northwest.

Endless quebradas streaked with impossible colors. Villages that move at the rhythm of the land. Mountains that shift with the light. And dirt roads that seem to lead nowhere until, suddenly, they do: a high-altitude vineyard, a hidden salt flat, a Quechua community where time feels suspended.

We partner with a pioneering local team with decades of experience exploring the far corners of the Puna and the Andes. Their journeys are bespoke and off-the-map, operated through private 4×4 expeditions led by expert local guides. From the Calchaquí Valleys to the Salinas Grandes, from Humahuaca Gorge to remote Iruya, the path is designed to be unhurried.

Our local team is driven by passion and purpose, they believe in travel that protects the environment and uplifts local communities, ensuring every journey leaves a positive impact.

Here, luxury takes a different form: sleeping at 3,000 meters surrounded by mountains. Sharing a meal with local cooks. Watching the sun ignite the folds of Pollera de la Colla. Being far from everything, and not needing anything else.

Stay

As part of a 4x4 journey across the northwest, you’ll travel through some of Argentina’s most remote and spectacular landscapes, staying in properties that are as much a part of the experience as the places themselves.

Estancia Colomé (Molinos, Salta) – One of the oldest working wineries in Argentina, nestled in the Calchaquí Valleys. Remote and refined, it offers vineyard views, world-class wines, and a James Turrell light museum. La Merced del Alto (Cachi, Salta) – A tranquil adobe-style property overlooking the Cachi valley, blending colonial charm with sweeping Andean views. Manantial del Silencio (Purmamarca, Jujuy) – A classic, elegant retreat just steps from the famous Cerro de los Siete Colores, with courtyards and gardens perfect for the slow afternoons of the high desert. Las Marías Hotel Boutique (Tilcara, Jujuy) – A stylish hideaway in the heart of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, combining stone and wood architecture with modern comfort. Patios de Cafayate (Cafayate, Salta) – A colonial-style estate surrounded by vineyards, with leafy courtyards, antique furniture, and views of the Calchaquí Valley. Perfect for exploring Cafayate’s renowned wineries.

Getting there

The gateway to Argentina’s northwest is Salta, reachable via a 2-hour flight from Buenos Aires. From here, scenic drives connect you to the high-altitude deserts, valleys, and canyons of Salta and Jujuy provinces. The routes themselves are part of the experience, winding mountain roads, dramatic passes like the Cuesta del Obispo, salt flats shimmering at 3,500 meters, and the multicolored hills of the Quebrada de Humahuaca.

Distances can be deceptive; while Purmamarca and Tilcara are only a few hours from Salta, the journey invites slow travel, with plenty of stops for viewpoints, markets, and small villages.

Worth knowing

The northwest blends indigenous heritage, colonial history, and dramatic geology into one of Argentina’s most culturally rich regions. Markets brim with woven textiles, ceramics, and regional flavors like llama stew and humitas. The wines, especially Torrontés from Cafayate and high-altitude Malbec, are as distinctive as the terrain, shaped by intense sun and cool nights. Altitudes range from 2,000 to over 4,000 meters, so pace yourself and stay hydrated, especially when visiting Salinas Grandes or high mountain passes. Weather is generally dry and sunny, though summer (December–March) brings brief, dramatic rains that green the valleys.

The road is not just a way to get somewhere, but an open-air gallery of shifting colors, historic chapels, and skies so wide they seem to belong to another scale entirely.
